Founded in 2018 by designer and artist Evan Jerry, Studio ANANSI represents a reflection on modernity with a nod to the Afrocentric elements that are masked in contemporary design. Sculptural, architectural storytelling defines his work— a reflection of Jerry’s Caribbean heritage.
“I aim to tell stories through design, so the narrative of each piece is very important because that's what's going to have longevity.”
A SENSE OF WONDER
Jerry is in constant exploration of natural landscapes and cities, inspired by everything from nature, to architecture, to art and sculpture. “The texture of a city, its sounds, its smells—I take all of it and convey that story to my designs.” In his current home of Portugal, he is particularly drawn to its strong sense of community and creating objects that are meant to be gathered around and shared.
“I approach furniture like a piece of sculpture. There’s a sense of permanency with using stone and natural materials like onyx, marble and wood. Each is incredibly unique, which means that each piece is itself one of a kind.”
